The lobular rosewood is expected to become a high-end market highlight

In recent days, the reporter visited the Xiamen redwood market and observed a growing presence of lobular rosewood. Once considered a quiet and less popular species, lobular rosewood has now started to gain attention, with rare wood varieties making appearances more frequently. Industry insiders suggest that this could be the year when lobular rosewood rises as a high-end choice in the market. There are now more raw materials available for lobular rosewood in the market than before. In the high-end mahogany sector, it has always been a rare commodity. At the Xiamen Redwood Market, finding complete sets of lobular rosewood furniture is uncommon. Some merchants display small pieces of the wood, which they treat as valuable treasures in their stores. Recently, the reporter learned that Xiamen Gaojun Redwood acquired a batch of lobular rosewood logs, totaling around 10 tons. According to the company’s general manager, Huang Shan, these materials were hard to come by, and the company had been tracking them for years before finally securing this batch. Huang Shan also mentioned that some investors outside the industry have started to take notice of lobular rosewood. He noted that there have been reports of heavy spending on rosewood purchases in the past, and even some mining friends have shown interest in investment collaboration. In cities like Beijing and Guangdong, where the redwood market is active, lobular rosewood has become more visible. Large and high-quality pieces are appearing more often, leading to increased speculation among industry players. According to insiders, with real estate and stock markets underperforming and inflation still a concern, many investors are seeking alternative avenues. As the redwood market recovers, some capital is flowing into scarce resources like premium hardwoods. Lobular rosewood is gaining traction as a potential highlight in the high-end market. Due to its rarity, many investors are hesitant to turn it into finished products. Instead, it's being held as a scarce raw material, waiting for value appreciation. At Gaojun Redwood’s store, the reporter saw a piece of wood measuring about 30 cm in diameter and 2.5 meters in length. Though not immediately striking, this material is highly valued. According to Huang Shan, such pieces can cost at least 3 million yuan per ton, with some pieces worth hundreds of thousands, equivalent to the price of a luxury car. Recent prices in the Xianyou timber market show that 1-meter-long logs with a diameter of 12-15 cm are sold at 660,000 yuan per ton, while larger ones (1.5–1.8 meters long, 13–20 cm in diameter) can reach 980,000 yuan per ton. Even higher grades can go up to 1.26 million yuan per ton. Compared to Hainan huanghuali, which is historically expensive, lobular rosewood still lags behind in terms of price. Sea yellow wood, for instance, can reach as high as 20 million yuan per ton, with some pieces priced at 10,000 yuan per kilogram. Industry insiders note that although sea yellow wood commands a much higher price, lobular rosewood still holds significant potential. The key difference lies in scarcity. Since lobular rosewood resources are not yet fully depleted, its price growth is slower compared to Hainan huanghuali. Meanwhile, Laos siamese rosewood has seen annual price increases of 20% to 30%, showing strong market performance. Given the success of sea yellow and siamese rosewood, lobular rosewood—once a well-known name in the redwood world—is expected to follow suit.
