The lobular rosewood is expected to become a high-end market highlight

In recent months, the reporter has noticed a significant increase in the presence of lobular rosewood in the Xiamen market. This once-overlooked wood is now gaining attention, with rare varieties making frequent appearances. Experts and collectors are closely watching its potential, as many believe it could soon emerge as a top-tier rosewood. One of the key factors driving this interest is the growing availability of raw materials. In the high-end mahogany market, lobular rosewood has long been considered a rarity. At the Xiamen Redwood Market, complete sets of furniture made from this wood are extremely uncommon. Instead, merchants often display small pieces, treating them like precious treasures within their stores. A few days ago, the reporter visited Xiamen Gaojun Redwood and learned that the company recently acquired a batch of lobular rosewood logs, totaling around 10 tons. According to the general manager, Huang Shan, these materials were hard to come by, and the company had been tracking them for years before finally securing the shipment. “Some investors outside the industry have started to take notice,” Huang said. “There are frequent reports of people spending large sums on rosewood. One of my mining friends even showed interest in collaborating.” Recent trends in Beijing, Guangdong, and other major redwood towns also point to a surge in lobular rosewood activity. Large, high-quality pieces are becoming more common, fueling speculation about its future value. Industry insiders suggest that with traditional investment avenues like real estate and stocks underperforming, and inflation still a concern, many investors are turning to alternative assets. High-end hardwoods, including lobular rosewood, are seen as a safe bet in times of economic uncertainty. As for its value, lobular rosewood is highly prized. Due to its scarcity, most investors prefer to hold onto the raw material rather than turn it into finished products. At Gaojun Redwood’s store, the reporter saw a piece of wood measuring about 30 cm in diameter and 2.5 meters in length. Though unimpressive at first glance, this piece is valued at over 3 million yuan per ton. According to recent market data from Fujian’s Xianyou timber market, prices for lobular rosewood vary depending on size. A log measuring 1 meter long with a diameter of 12–15 cm can be sold for 660,000 yuan per ton. Larger logs, up to 1.8 meters long and 20 cm in diameter, fetch as much as 980,000 yuan per ton, while even bigger pieces can reach 1.26 million yuan per ton. However, compared to Hainan huanghuali—once the gold standard of luxury woods—lobular rosewood still has a long way to go. The current sea yellow wood market sees transactions where individual pieces can sell for as much as 20 million yuan per ton, with some pricing reaching 10,000 yuan per kilogram. “Sea yellow is truly exceptional,” said an industry insider in Xiamen. “Lobular rosewood is still available, but much of it is being hoarded by traders.” While its price hasn’t risen as sharply as that of Hainan huanghuali, its limited supply suggests it has strong potential. Meanwhile, Laos siamese rosewood, another rising star in the high-end mahogany market, has seen annual price increases of 20% to 30%. With such trends, experts believe that lobular rosewood is well-positioned to follow a similar path. In conclusion, with increased availability, growing investor interest, and historical comparisons to other premium woods, lobular rosewood is no longer just a niche product—it's emerging as a potential highlight in the high-end mahogany market.
