In traditional tea farming, harvests usually occur three times a year. However, with the use of 24-hour LED lighting, the growth rate can increase by up to six times, allowing for as many as ten annual harvests. This innovative technique is being adopted in Japan, where tea is now cultivated up to ten times per year.
According to a report from Japan's "Yomiuri Shimbun" on April 26, the Takada Noda tea processing plant in Ibaraki Prefecture has started using red and green LED lights indoors to grow pesticide-free tea seedlings. This new method not only simplifies the process but also produces high-quality, safe, and nutritious tea.
The tea grown in this facility is already being used as an ingredient in tempura and other tea-based dishes at the company’s coffee shop. The fifth-generation general manager, Noguchi Noguchi, expressed hope that these new tea recipes could gain widespread popularity.
Inside the company’s small 10-square-meter “plant workshop,†purple LED lights illuminate the space. To optimize photosynthesis, the team is experimenting with different light colors. When they replaced the lighting with fluorescent lamps, the tea leaves turned bright yellow-green, showing promising results.
By keeping the LED lights on 24/7, the room temperature remains stable at 22-23°C. Since the cultivation is done indoors, there’s no risk of pests or bacteria, eliminating the need for pesticides. Water and nutrients are delivered automatically through a spraying system beneath the seedbeds.
Noguchi began exploring the edible potential of tea and its roots about two and a half years ago. Since last April, he has been reviewing cultivation techniques and developing new menu ideas.
This indoor growing method is not affected by seasonal changes, ensuring a steady supply of tea for culinary use throughout the year. Researchers are also gathering data to support the theory that continuous photosynthesis can enhance the levels of catechins and vitamins in tea leaves.
With the rise of agricultural automation, producing crops requires less manual labor, which helps address the issue of aging farmers. Noguchi stated, “Although the use of tea may vary, we aim to create a sustainable and constructive tea production model.â€
Ibaraki Prefecture, known for its wolfberry tea, faced challenges after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. Output dropped significantly, and even in 2012, production and sales were only 60% of what they were in 2010. This event created major obstacles for the local tea industry.
As the tea-picking season approaches, Noguchi said he will do everything possible to bring tea back into people’s hearts and rekindle its popularity.
