Morphological Characteristics of Purple Grass
The stems of purple grass are fleshy and purplish-red in color. They are typically sessile, meaning they attach directly to the base without a stalk. The inflorescence is located at the fork of the stem, with linear-lanceolate bracts. This plant has a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from other grasses.
The flower structure includes three green, ovoid sepals that remain on the plant even after flowering. The petals are blue-purple in color, broad-ovate in shape, and add to the visual appeal of the bloom. There are six stamens, two of which are fertile while the remaining four are degenerate. One filament is short and sessile, while others are attached in a similar manner.
The ovary has three chambers, with long filaments and a capitate stigma. After pollination, the plant produces elliptical capsules with three prominent ridges. The seeds are trilobed and semi-circular, with a brown coloration. This unique seed structure aids in dispersal and germination.
