South African researchers have developed new fuel made from coal dust and algae

Coal mines often produce fine particles of various minerals such as coal dust. Coal dust not only pollutes the air and affects the health of the miners. When a certain concentration is reached in the air, it can cause explosion hazards. Recently, researchers at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in South Africa have developed a new fuel called Coalgae made from coal dust and algae. It is hoped that this new energy will have a positive impact on the environment.

The researchers first cultivated algae in a large pond, and then its concentrated algae and coal dust form a mass. These lumps transform into high-quality crude oil after being processed at a high temperature of 450°C. The crude oil can then be refined and the remaining solids can be used as thermal coal.

The researchers pointed out that if the world's excess coal dust is used to make new Coalgae fuel, it may be widely used. In fact, they estimate that the use of new fuel extracted from coal dust can meet the oil demand in South Africa by 40%.

Researchers at the current NMMU team are still testing, hoping to determine the cost of large-scale production of this new fuel. According to researchers, many institutions from all over the world expressed their keen interest in this new fuel.
