It is particularly effective against perennial root weeds and is commonly used in agricultural settings such as rubber plantations, mulberry fields, tea gardens, orchards, and sugarcane farms. Its mode of action involves inhibiting the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), which plays a crucial role in the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids like phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan. By disrupting this pathway, glyphosate interferes with protein synthesis and ultimately leads to plant death. The herbicide is absorbed through plant foliage and transported throughout the plant system, making it effective against over 40 families of both monocot and dicot plants, including annuals, perennials, herbs, and shrubs. Once glyphosate binds with metal ions such as iron or aluminum, it becomes inactive. Importantly, it does not harm seeds or soil microorganisms, contributing to its environmental safety profile. It is important to note that glyphosate and PMIDA are not the same product. While glyphosate acts as an intermediate in the production of certain herbicides, it can be converted into the final active ingredient under specific conditions.
