Combining suitable national conditions with advanced technologies, the production of high-quality pesticide intermediates often involves multiple technological routes. Selecting the right process and products is crucial for competitiveness. While it's ideal to adopt advanced foreign technologies, they can sometimes be difficult to master. Therefore, adapting and applying locally suitable technologies is equally important. For example, isopropylaniline, a key intermediate in the synthesis of isoproturon, was previously imported from abroad.
In many foreign countries, isopropylaniline is produced through the amination of isopropylphenol, a process that is relatively simple but highly demanding in terms of technical expertise. In China, alternative methods were explored, such as using o-isopropylisopropylnaphthalene obtained by nitration of isopropylbenzene, along with corresponding amines, for para- and ortho-position separation. However, after years of research, these methods did not yield satisfactory results.
Currently, the separation of nitro compounds is achieved through fractional distillation, allowing the isolation of monoisopropyl nitrobenzene and o-isopropyl nitrobenzene separately. The former can be reduced to p-isopropylaniline, an important intermediate in pesticide production, while the latter can be used as a raw material for insecticides targeting wax and leafhoppers. These developments represent a successful integration of domestic technological adaptations with practical application, demonstrating how local innovation can complement global advancements in chemical manufacturing.
