Design comes from life and changes life

Q: I'm really happy to have this interview with you. How many years have you been working in the design field? And why did you choose to work in this industry?

Lin Haiquan: It has been about 13 years. To be honest, I believe there's a certain fate that led me to this profession, and it's also something I truly love. When it comes to choosing a career, personal passion is the most important factor.

Q: What do you think a successful designer should possess?

Lin Haiquan: Success in design involves several key elements. This topic has been widely discussed on WeChat recently, especially regarding Liang Zhitian. In my opinion, there are three main aspects: business success, creative success, and overall professional growth. While each is important, I believe the most lasting and meaningful one is the comprehensive development of a designer’s skills and mindset.

Q: What kind of design style do you personally prefer?

Lin Haiquan: I would say I’m more inclined towards the new Chinese style and the new classical European style. These styles allow me to express my personal feelings and preferences. The classical European style tends to be more imitative, while the Chinese style is deeply rooted in culture. Everyone interprets Chinese elements differently, which makes it very rich and diverse.

Q: What is your design philosophy?

Lin Haiquan: My philosophy is that design should come from life and improve the quality of life for the people who use it. Design isn’t just about aesthetics; it's about creating a better living experience.

Q: You’ve now started your own company. How is it different from working as an individual designer?

Lin Haiquan: Starting a company requires more management and a broader perspective. For example, when working on a project, we need to consider the budget, planning, and long-term strategy. It’s not just about creativity—it’s about building a sustainable business.

Q: Does your company only focus on design, or do you also handle construction?

Lin Haiquan: Currently, our main focus is on design, and we only take on some selective construction projects.

Q: How do you communicate with clients who don’t know much about design, materials, or decoration? How do you help them accept your suggestions?

Lin Haiquan: It's completely normal for clients to lack knowledge in these areas. That's exactly why we need to demonstrate our professionalism. As Shenzhen is known as the design capital, sometimes clients can be too involved, but I believe in guiding them through the design process. In foreign countries, they often give more freedom to designers, which leads to better results. It's important for us to understand the client’s needs and help them see the value of good design in their lives.

Q: Do you think your work leans more toward art or practical life?

Lin Haiquan: I believe the best designs are a balance between art and real-life application. When we create, we must be inspired by life and integrate design into daily experiences. Design is closely tied to culture and the time we live in. So, it's always a combination—evolving over time. In today’s fast-paced world, our goal is to help people feel more relaxed and comfortable through thoughtful design.

Q: Do you prefer a simple style or a mixed style?

Lin Haiquan: It depends on the stage and context. Aesthetics change over time, and a successful designer should be able to blend cultural understanding, materials, and lifestyle into their work. What matters is that the design resonates with the user. In the past, people were less open to mixing styles, finding them too chaotic. But now, with evolving perspectives, people are more receptive and find it exciting.

Q: What do you think makes a successful design?

Lin Haiquan: A successful design is one that combines artistic expression with practical life. Interior design, in particular, is all about serving the end user. Every project must be designed with the client in mind.

Q: Is there a difference between commercial design and personal design?

Lin Haiquan: There is a difference, but it's not absolute. As you gain experience, the beauty you see in other places can be integrated into your own work. Human taste evolves constantly, and as long as we keep improving, we can continue to create great designs.

Q: What’s the most satisfying project you’ve worked on so far?

Lin Haiquan: We’re still in the early stages of our design journey, so it's hard to say we've achieved anything fully satisfactory yet. Our goal is always to pursue more perfect and meaningful works.

Q: What are your plans for 2014?

Lin Haiquan: From a company perspective, we plan to enhance the quality of our design work. This includes improving the standardization of our drawings and ensuring every step of the process is systematic and high-quality.
