China's power transmission and distribution and control equipment industry drives the rapid growth of power electronic components

In 2009, China's transmission and distribution and control equipment industry experienced remarkable progress, fueled by major projects like large-scale long-distance power transmission, UHV grid construction, and the renovation of rural power grids. This sector reported an annual sales revenue of 656.19 billion yuan, marking a year-on-year growth of 15.7%, with total profits reaching 49.13 billion yuan, up 19.5% from the previous year. The rapid expansion of this industry drove all five primary sub-sectors to show robust growth in 2009. Notably, the capacitor and auxiliary equipment sub-sector saw the most impressive performance, with its main business income and total profits climbing by 28.3% and 63.3%, respectively, compared to the previous year. Key factors contributing to this growth include China’s advancements in ultra-high voltage (UHV) transmission technologies, the ongoing investment in UHV demonstration projects between 2009 and 2010, and the country’s increasing focus on energy conservation, emission reduction, and improving voltage quality, safety, and efficiency. However, in the first quarter of 2010, the industry faced a temporary setback due to reduced state investments in power grids and falling equipment prices. As seasonal power demands rose and smart grid projects gained momentum, the industry rebounded strongly in the second quarter. Nevertheless, not all sub-sectors performed equally well. Power electronic component and power distribution switchgear control equipment sectors enjoyed rapid growth, while the capacitor and auxiliary equipment sub-sector experienced a sharp decline. Looking ahead, China’s growing electricity demand and significant projects such as high-voltage transmission will ensure continued growth for the transmission and distribution equipment industry in 2010. Power distribution switchgear control equipment, transformers, rectifiers, and inductors are anticipated to lead this growth, making them the primary drivers of the industry throughout the year. These developments underscore China’s commitment to modernizing its power infrastructure and addressing critical challenges like energy efficiency and sustainability.
