RV repair knowledge to protect the camping water supply system balance

It is well known that pumps are essential components in RV caravans and can fail unexpectedly, often at the worst possible moment. The water supply system in an RV typically includes a clean water tank, plastic or copper piping, a water pump, a gray water tank, and a drain valve. While the basic design of these systems is similar across different vehicles, the pumps used in RVs are usually 12-volt DC models, such as the popular Shurflo units. Even when connected to a 120-volt AC power source at a campsite, these pumps still operate on 12 volts through an internal converter. When you turn on the faucet, the system detects a pre-set pressure level—usually around 30 psi—and activates the pump to supply water. Once the faucet is closed, water continues to flow until the pressure in the entire system balances out. If the pump fails outside of normal operation, especially due to vibration or hard-wired components like brass fittings, it may be time to replace the hose or check for wear and tear. To reduce noise from the pump, consider mounting it on a rubber mat or installing a silencer. Here are some self-check steps for common pump issues: first, check if there's any residual water in the tank, as standing water can lead to sediment buildup and affect performance. Also, regularly inspect the fuse to ensure proper electrical connection between the pump and the power source. It’s important to check the battery and transformer connections periodically to avoid power loss. Additionally, examine the wiring for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections, which could cause short circuits or power failures. If the pump isn’t supplying water properly, check the rubber diaphragm inside for blockages or tears. This can be done by removing the three screws on the pump housing and inspecting the internal components. You should also open the shut-off valve to confirm that the line between the fresh water tank and the pump is clear and unobstructed. These simple checks can help prevent major breakdowns and keep your RV water system running smoothly.
