In recent news, Flushmate, a leading U.S. manufacturer of toilet flushing systems, has issued a massive recall of millions of pressure-assisted toilet devices. According to reports, these units could potentially turn toilets into dangerous "time bombs." It’s worth noting that several well-known brands in the plumbing industry, such as American Standard and Kohler, have used Flushmate's pressure-assisted technology in their products. The recall is expected to affect approximately 2.3 million toilets across the U.S., with around 9,400 units affected in Canada.
However, experts suggest that this type of "bomb toilet" is unlikely to be sold in China. Xie Xin, the secretary-general of the National Federation of Industry and Commerce Sanitary Committee, stated that after an extensive year-long investigation, no major Chinese brands were found to be using the recalled devices. He emphasized that if any domestic manufacturers had implemented similar technology, it would have been widely promoted as a key selling point. So far, there has been no such publicity.
To ensure transparency, the Sanitary Committee recently sent out urgent inquiries to about 100 major brands, asking them to confirm whether they use pressure-assisted flushing systems. This step aims to reassure consumers and provide clarity on product safety.
The issue has raised concerns among Chinese consumers, especially those who own water-saving toilets. However, Xie Xin clarified that the U.S. pressure-assisted systems are different from the water-saving designs commonly used in China. In the U.S., these systems rely on external equipment to increase water pressure inside the tank, allowing for efficient flushing with less water. In contrast, Chinese toilets typically use internal siphonic designs to achieve water efficiency without the need for additional pressurizing components.
It’s important to note that while some incidents of toilet explosions have occurred in China, the cause was usually related to poor-quality materials rather than the flushing system itself. Xie Xin explained that high-quality toilets are fired at temperatures of around 1200°C for about 20 hours, making them highly resistant to bursting under normal water pressure. However, cheaper, low-quality products may not meet these standards, even if they look good on the surface.
He advised consumers to prioritize reputable brands and not be swayed by appearance alone. Choosing a trusted manufacturer ensures better quality and long-term reliability. With proper care and selection, toilet safety should not be a concern for most users.
