Bomb toilets contain more water-saving features

In a recent development, Flushmate, a U.S.-based manufacturer of toilet flushing systems, has issued a massive recall of millions of pressure-assisted toilet devices. According to reports, the faulty equipment could potentially turn toilets into dangerous "time bombs." Notably, several well-known brands such as American Standard and Kohler have used these devices in their products. The recall is expected to affect around 2.3 million toilets across the U.S., with an estimated 9,400 units impacted in Canada. Despite the widespread concern, experts believe that the so-called "bomb toilets" are unlikely to be sold in China. Xie Xin, secretary-general of the National Federation of Industry and Commerce Sanitary Committee, stated that after a comprehensive industry survey, no major Chinese brands were found to be using these pressure-assisted devices. The committee conducted extensive research from July last year until recently, and no evidence of such devices was found among leading domestic manufacturers. From a logical standpoint, Xie also pointed out that these types of flushing systems are primarily designed for water conservation, which is a key focus in China. If any domestic brands had similar technology, they would likely have promoted it as a selling point. However, he hasn’t heard of any such claims. To ensure transparency, the committee has sent out urgent investigation letters to over 100 brands, asking them to confirm whether they use pneumatic flushing devices. The issue has sparked concerns among Chinese consumers, especially those who own water-saving toilets. Xie clarified the difference between U.S. and Chinese water-saving technologies. In the U.S., pressure-assisted systems rely on external equipment to boost tank pressure and reduce water usage. In contrast, Chinese water-saving toilets achieve efficiency through internal design, such as optimized flushing channels and siphon systems, without the need for external pressurization—thus eliminating the risk of explosions. While there have been instances of toilet bursts in China, the cause is typically related to poor-quality porcelain rather than the flushing mechanism itself. Xie explained that high-quality toilets are fired at temperatures around 1200°C for about 20 hours, making them highly resistant to bursting under normal water pressure. However, cheaper alternatives may not meet these standards. These inferior products might appear fine on the surface but can crack or burst due to insufficient strength in the ceramic body. He urged consumers to prioritize reputable brands and pay attention to both the quality and the reputation of the product, rather than just focusing on the appearance. With the growing awareness of safety and quality, it’s more important than ever to make informed choices when purchasing bathroom fixtures.
