World's largest primary aluminum producer suspends Nigerian aluminum smelter

The world's largest primary aluminum producer recently announced that it has decided to temporarily shut down its aluminum smelter in Nigeria due to concerns over natural gas supply. The Russian company, which operates the facility, stated that the suspension will begin at the end of April. In 2012, the plant produced 22,000 tons of aluminum, which was approximately 88% below its maximum annual production capacity. Despite implementing various measures to stabilize operations, the company confirmed in a statement that ALSCON still lacks a reliable and consistent supply of natural gas. This ongoing issue has forced the decision to halt production, raising concerns about the long-term viability of the plant. The move could have broader implications for the region’s aluminum market and energy infrastructure. Experts suggest that the situation highlights the vulnerability of industrial operations in areas with unstable energy supplies. With global demand for aluminum continuing to rise, such disruptions may prompt companies to reevaluate their reliance on volatile energy sources. The company has not yet provided details on when or if the smelter might resume operations, but the current uncertainty underscores the challenges faced by industries in developing economies.
