When installing a TIMKEN thrust bearing, it is crucial to check the straightness of the shaft's axial line and the shaft itself. One common method involves fixing a dial gauge to the casing's end face, placing the gauge's contact point on the bearing's raceway, and rotating the bearing. If the dial pointer shows any deviation, it indicates that the axial line is not aligned with the shaft's centerline. In cases where the housing bore is deep, an extended dial gauge can be used for more accurate measurements. Once the TIMKEN thrust bearing is properly installed, the seat should allow the rolling elements to move freely within the raceways of the upper and lower rings. If the installation is incorrect, the contact surfaces may experience severe wear. Since the difference between the shaft ring and the seat is typically minimal, careful attention must be given during installation to avoid errors. Additionally, there should be a clearance of 0.2 to 0.5 mm between the TIMKEN bearing seat and the housing bore. This clearance compensates for manufacturing tolerances and misalignment during assembly. It allows the bearing ring to adjust slightly during operation, preventing collisions and ensuring smooth performance. Without this clearance, the bearing could suffer significant damage.
