Foshan has become a hub for high-tech innovation, particularly with the arrival of Dr. Zhao Qingchun’s overseas research team, which has been based in the city for over a year and has already made significant contributions to both technology and industry. One of their major achievements is leading the development of China's first national standard for pulsed fiber lasers. This milestone highlights the team's growing influence and technical expertise in the field.
In late 2012, Foshan welcomed the returnee team led by Dr. Zhao Qingchun, resulting in the establishment of Guangdong Gaoju Laser Co., Ltd. As the company’s chairman, Zhao Qing emphasized that Gaoju has developed three core technologies: semiconductor laser chips, pulsed fiber lasers, and high-power semiconductor laser molding. These technologies are currently among the most advanced in the world. To date, Gaoju has filed 15 invention patents and plans to apply for more than 20 this year. The company is now a leader in multiple laser-related fields, aiming to build a complete industrial chain—from core semiconductor laser chips, basic materials, and equipment to high-end laser systems.
After settling in Foshan for over a year, Gaoju began to see tangible results. In 2013, its output exceeded 2 million yuan, and it is projected to reach between 10 million and 15 million yuan this year. With full-scale production of its three core technologies expected by 2015, the company anticipates annual output exceeding 50 million yuan.
At the start of this year, Zhao Qing’s team, along with other academic experts, submitted a massive 30 billion yuan laser development plan to the national level, which has received a positive initial response. “I hope Foshan can integrate resources and strive to secure a place in this grand vision,†Zhao said. “We aim to build the Foshan Laser Industrial Park and cultivate our own complete industry chain.†His vision for Foshan is ambitious and full of potential.
“Advanced laser technology is the core of future manufacturing,†Zhao explained. “Whether it’s automobiles, furniture, molds, home appliances, clothing, aluminum profiles, or new materials, the integration of lasers means rapid development in equipment manufacturing.†He gave several examples: drones can be charged in mid-air using laser technology; data from space satellites can be transmitted to Earth in just 37 seconds—171 times faster than before; 60% of Apple’s mobile phone manufacturing process involves laser technology; and Google’s self-driving cars rely on fiber lasers for positioning.
With such promising applications and a clear roadmap, Gaoju is not only shaping the future of laser technology but also helping Foshan emerge as a key player in the global high-tech industry.
