Air-cooled heat pump works

Air-cooled heat pumps are a crucial component of central air conditioning systems in homes. In simple terms, an air-cooled heat pump operates using the compression refrigeration cycle, where fans help absorb or release heat from the surrounding air. To better understand how it works, let’s take a closer look at its detailed working principle. An air-cooled heat pump system functions as the main unit, utilizing an air-cooled condenser instead of a cooling tower. The evaporator, on the other hand, is water-cooled. During summer, it provides chilled water for cooling, and in winter, it supplies hot water for heating. The fan coil units act as the terminal components of the system, installed in rooms to circulate air. Water is pumped from the bottom to the top, allowing the heat pump to transfer heat from a lower temperature source to a higher one. Therefore, a heat pump can be seen as a device that lifts heat from one place to another. The primary function of a heat pump is to extract heat from the environment and transfer it to a warmer object, operating similarly to a refrigerator but following the reverse Carnot cycle. Compared to air-source heat pumps, air-cooled models typically have lower efficiency. They usually operate with a water inlet temperature around 5°C (a common setting for many manufacturers), while the temperature difference between the supply and return water can reach up to 40°C. These heat pump units work in conjunction with fan coils. The heat pump provides either cold or hot water, which then flows through the fan coils to exchange heat and produce cool or warm air. You can think of the air-cooled heat pump as the "brain" of the central air conditioning system. Without it functioning properly, the entire system would fail to operate. As technology continues to advance, we are increasingly exposed to more high-tech products. Understanding how these devices work not only enhances our knowledge but also helps us use them more effectively and efficiently.
