The furniture industry showed slight signs of recovery in the first quarter of 2013

As China's largest and most influential furniture fair is set to take place, the event has once again positioned Guangdong as a leader in the Chinese furniture industry. The transformation from "hot" to "cold" in the exhibition's impact reflects the ebb and flow of the domestic furniture sector. At this year’s three major furniture exhibitions held in March, many industry professionals felt a renewed sense of optimism, signaling a quiet but meaningful recovery in the market. The 29th Dongguan Furniture Exhibition opened with great enthusiasm, drawing a large crowd and showcasing strong interest from both exhibitors and visitors. Industry insiders noted that sales for the first quarter have seen a significant year-on-year increase, with dealers reporting stronger orders and improved foot traffic at retail stores. Several brands also launched successful "3.15" themed marketing campaigns, further boosting their visibility and sales performance. Chen Annan, director and deputy general manager of Bosen Furniture, believes that although challenges remain due to external factors, the market is showing clear signs of recovery. Similarly, Ye Zhenghong, director of a leading style furniture brand, mentioned that not only is the furniture market recovering, but the building materials sector is also gradually warming up. The impressive turnout at the three major furniture fairs has boosted confidence across the industry. Attendees consistently praised the events, noting high visitor numbers and positive feedback from dealers. According to official statistics, the 29th Dongguan International Furniture Fair attracted nearly 120,000 visitors—20,000 more than the previous edition. The 31st Guangzhou International Furniture Fair saw around 190,000 global buyers, a 50,000 increase compared to the last session. The Shenzhen International Furniture Fair also recorded higher attendance than its predecessor. Once empty halls have now become bustling hubs of activity, reflecting a return to normalcy. This renewed energy has given industry players renewed hope. Ren Wen, deputy general manager of Nature Mattress, expressed confidence in the second half of the year, while Zhang Yun of Dibiao Furniture expects a recovery by mid-2013 and improvement into the following year. Other major brands such as Lihao Sofa, Tianmei Furniture, Yalusi Furniture, and Desheng Furniture also voiced optimism about the market’s future, particularly in the second half of the year. However, some industry leaders suggest that the increased popularity of the exhibitions may be due to dealers who have been waiting for a long time for a market turnaround. Zhu Juxi, deputy general manager of Herui Furniture, explained that with the current economic environment being tougher, dealers are more selective and eager to find better brands through these platforms. This has led to a more rational and cautious approach when choosing products and partners. Yao Qingwen, CEO of Miser Murano, and Zheng Zhimin, chairman of Yalusi Furniture, agree with this view, suggesting that the surge in exhibition attendance might be a result of dealers being held back for too long by the challenging market conditions. Despite the positive signs, Yao remains cautious about the full-year outlook. He points out that consumer awareness has matured since 2008, and the furniture market is now highly competitive. With so many choices available, consumers have become more discerning and careful in their purchasing decisions. While the industry is on the road to recovery, it’s important for brands to focus on innovation and product differentiation to stand out. In a saturated market, simply riding the wave of recovery isn’t enough—brands must work harder to capture attention and build lasting customer loyalty.
