As China's largest and most influential furniture fair is set to take place, Guangdong's three major furniture exhibitions have once again become the spotlight of the Chinese furniture industry. These events not only reflect the evolving trends in the sector but also signal a potential turnaround for the entire industry. This March, as the exhibitions opened, many industry professionals felt a noticeable warming trend, suggesting that the furniture market might be on the road to recovery.
The 29th Dongguan Furniture Fair kicked off with impressive turnout, drawing a large number of visitors and generating strong interest from both domestic and international buyers. Industry insiders reported that sales figures for the first quarter of this year have seen a significant increase compared to the same period last year. This growth was reflected not only in rising dealer orders but also in the improved performance of retail stores. Several brands even launched successful "3.15" themed marketing campaigns, further boosting their visibility and sales.
Chen Annan, director and deputy general manager of Bosen Furniture, noted that while challenges still exist due to external factors, the market is showing signs of recovery. He believes that current difficulties are temporary and can be overcome with the right strategies. Similarly, Ye Zhenghong, director of a style furniture brand, observed that the building materials industry is also beginning to show signs of improvement.
The popularity of the three major furniture fairs has significantly boosted industry confidence. Attendees consistently praised the high attendance, positive dealer feedback, and overall satisfaction with the exhibitions. According to official statistics, the 29th Dongguan International Furniture Fair attracted nearly 120,000 visitors—20,000 more than the previous edition. The 31st Guangzhou International Furniture Fair saw almost 190,000 global buyers, an increase of 50,000 over the last session. The Shenzhen International Furniture Fair also recorded higher visitor numbers than its previous edition. Once empty halls are now bustling with activity, marking a return to the industry’s golden days.
This surge in enthusiasm has given many industry players renewed optimism. Ren Wen, deputy general manager of Nature Mattress, expressed confidence in the second half of the year, while Zhang Yun of Dibiao Furniture expects a recovery by mid-2013, with continued improvement into the following year. Other well-known brands such as Lihao Sofa, Tianmei Furniture, Yalusi Furniture, and Desheng Furniture also shared their positive outlook for the market in 2013, especially in the latter half of the year.
However, some industry leaders believe that the recent upswing may be partly due to dealers who have been constrained by a difficult market environment for too long. Zhu Juxi, deputy general manager of Herui Furniture, explained that dealers are now more selective and rational when choosing products and brands. They are eager to discover new trends and better opportunities at the exhibitions.
Yao Qingwen, CEO of Miser Murano, and Zheng Zhimin, chairman of Yalusi Furniture, echoed this sentiment, suggesting that the increased exhibition attendance could be attributed to pent-up demand from dealers. Despite this positive sign, Yao remains cautious about the full-year prospects for the furniture market. He pointed out that consumer awareness has matured since 2008, leading to a more competitive landscape where product diversity is high, and choices are overwhelming.
In this environment, consumers tend to be more cautious and rational. While the industry as a whole is recovering, it doesn’t guarantee success for every brand. Companies must focus on innovation, design, and effective marketing to stand out and avoid being overshadowed by larger competitors. The path to recovery is clear, but the journey ahead will require smart strategies and adaptability.
