Electrical performance protective footwear is a crucial part of personal protective equipment (PPE), designed to safeguard the feet from electrical hazards. This category includes anti-static shoes, conductive shoes, and insulating shoes, all of which help prevent electrostatic damage and electric shocks. These types of footwear are essential in environments where electrical risks are present, such as industrial or electrical work areas.

Anti-static and conductive shoes come in various styles, including leather and fabric-soled options. They can be manufactured using different techniques such as adhesion, injection molding, or casting. Insulating shoes are available in leather, fabric, and plastic materials, with leather versions further classified based on their construction methods—adhesive, mold, injection, or stitched. Anti-static shoes help dissipate static electricity from the body, offering protection against low-voltage shocks (up to 250V). Conductive shoes allow for rapid dissipation of static charges but are only suitable for environments without a risk of electric shock. Insulating shoes provide a barrier between the feet and charged surfaces, preventing direct contact and reducing the risk of electric shock.

Key Safety Guidelines for Wearing Electrical Protective Footwear

When using anti-static or conductive shoes, it's important not to wear thick insulated socks or insoles, as they may interfere with the grounding function. The floor surface should be properly grounded—anti-static shoes require an anti-static environment, while conductive shoes need a conductive surface. Regular resistance testing is recommended, typically every 200 hours of use. Store these shoes in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from oil, acids, or other corrosive substances. For anti-static and conductive shoes, if the product is more than 18 months old, it must be tested for electrical properties before being used or sold.

For insulating shoes, maintaining dry conditions is critical during use. Avoid contact with sharp objects, high temperatures, or chemicals that could damage the material and compromise its insulation properties. If the soles show signs of wear or damage, the shoes should no longer be used as insulating footwear. Insulating shoes older than 24 months must undergo electrical performance testing and meet regulatory standards before being sold or used. Each test result is valid for up to six months, ensuring continued safety and compliance.
