British CSS company to develop new dye-sensitized solar cells

Colour Synthesis Solutions (CSS) is a supplier of chemical solutions that has risen in recent years. They receive a total of GBP 600,000 in funding from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) in the next three years. In the research and development of new types of solar cells.

CSS collaborates with Merck, a German multinational group, and 3G Solar, an Israeli renewable energy company. CSS will focus on the development of Dye Sensitized Cells (DSC) fuels. Dye-sensitized batteries are low-cost thin-film solar cells that replace traditional twin-crystal solar cells.

The research team hopes that the development of this new type of battery (COBRA) will provide a practical, inexpensive alternative to current thin-film and crystalline silicon batteries. If this project is successful, DSC can bring more efficient energy generation methods, making solar power a more practical and cost-effective alternative energy source in places where light is insufficient.

The DSC began its development in 1990 and was invented by Michael Gratzel and O'Regan at the EPFL in Lausanne in 1991.

CSS was founded six years ago by two researchers from the University of Manchester. At present, the company has increased to nine chemists. In the next few years, CSS will have potential for development in dye-sensitized solar cells.
