The University of Toronto is investigating new solar energy technologies that allow windows to perform as well as rooftop solar panels. Researchers participating in the plan said that it is expected to launch solar windows within five years.
Dr. Yang Zhenyu, a member of the research team, said that the semiconductors of traditional solar panels are a bit hard and can only be placed on the roof, because they block light from being placed on the windows. They are studying a new type of solar technology that uses chemical methods to synthesize nanoparticles. Dissolved in a solvent to form a black "ink", and apply it to the window, these particles will absorb sunlight and convert it into electrical energy, and then attach the electrodes on both sides of the window to absorb the electricity.
Although these "inks" are black, they only need to be coated with a thin layer of solvent. Thinner films thinner than one-tenth of one's hair, painted on the windows are transparent and will not block the sunlight, except for the windows. Can also be applied to the exterior walls of buildings.
This kind of coating technology has been researched into a mature stage. The biggest problem at this stage is how to improve the stability of the material, so that the windows coated with this film can absorb sunlight for a long time and be durable, and secondly, the efficiency of absorbing sunlight. Technology absorbs sunlight at a rate of 10%, slightly lower than solar panels.
The current performance is sufficient for a month, but after a year, the efficiency has dropped by at least 10%. Some solar companies have already started this technology and they are expected to come out within five years.
