Precautions for storage of residual pesticides

Every year, farmers often end up with leftover pesticides that they can't use effectively. To ensure safety and prevent accidents, it's recommended to store any remaining pesticides in sealed wooden boxes, clearly labeled on the outside. Never keep pesticides in the same area as food, vegetables, or animal feed. Also, avoid storing them near flammable or explosive materials like fireworks or gunpowder. The original containers should never be reused for food or daily household items. Most pesticides are volatile, so it’s crucial to store them in airtight containers to prevent harmful fumes from escaping into the air. For example, dimethoate, dichlorvos, and phoxim can release dangerous gases if not properly sealed. Always make sure the lids are tightly closed. The labels on pesticide containers must remain intact. If the label becomes faded or unclear due to water exposure, it should be manually rewritten and attached to the outside of the container for clarity and safety. If you have unused pesticides, do not mix different types in the same bottle or bag, as this can lead to chemical reactions that reduce effectiveness or even cause dangerous situations. Some pesticides need to be stored separately—especially acidic, alkaline, and neutral ones, as mixing them may decrease their potency or cause degradation. Maintain a relative humidity below 75% to prevent clumping caused by moisture. Avoid high temperatures, as they can damage emulsified pesticides or reduce the effectiveness of powdered formulations. Store all pesticides in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, with temperatures not exceeding 35°C. However, temperatures below 1°C may cause liquid pesticides to freeze, so it’s important to keep them above 1°C. In cold weather, cover them with straw or rice husks to provide insulation and protection. According to the China Pesticide Network, many pesticides are sensitive to sunlight, and prolonged exposure can cause them to break down and lose effectiveness. Therefore, it’s best to store them in dark, shaded areas. Any expired or leftover pesticides should be buried deeply rather than discarded into ponds or rivers to prevent environmental contamination.
