High-end paint demand high-functional environmental protection resin

With the increasingly stringent environmental protection regulations and the rapid development of high-speed railways, automobiles, and new wind power, the demand for high value-added, functional, and environmentally friendly coatings has increased significantly, and new demands have also been placed on the coating resin industry. During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the paint and resin industry will focus on the new pattern of the paint market, pay attention to the development of personalized products, and avoid the homogeneity of products to provide guarantee for the rapid development of the paint industry. This is the latest news from the 2011 China Coating Industry Association Coating Resins Subcommittee's annual meeting.

The Secretary-General of the Coatings Association, Yang Yuande, proposed that the resin used in high-end paints in China is monopolized by foreign multinational companies and lacks high-quality, high-performance resins with independent intellectual property rights. This phenomenon seriously restricts the development of the paint industry. At the same time, there are few domestic companies engaged in basic research and applied research of resins, and most of them have introduced foreign coating formulations or coating technologies. He pointed out that China has the world's largest real estate, automotive, and shipping markets, coupled with the rapid development of new areas such as high-speed rail and wind power, and the development of environment-friendly, high-functionality resin for coatings has become an urgent issue to tackle.

Gui Taijiang, chief engineer of the Marine Chemical Research Institute, proposed that using renewable biomass resin as raw material for coating is an important way to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction. He suggested that powerful research institutions should actively carry out basic theories and applied research of biomass resins. At the same time, he also called for relevant national departments and industry organizations to support the industrialization of the research and the results.

The experts and representatives at the meeting reached a consensus that with the downstream industry increasingly demanding environmental protection and performance of paint products, especially in the field of industrial coatings, the traditional resin technology can no longer meet the needs of its energy-saving emission reduction and sustainable and healthy development of the industry. During the "12th Five-Year Plan" period, resin companies must pay attention to the development of high-solid resin, powder coating resin, light-curing resin and water-based resin, and actively promote the development of new processes, new materials and new technologies.

It is understood that in recent years, China's paint industry has developed rapidly, driving the steady growth of coating resins. Especially during the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, the coating resin industry has further shifted to scale, group, and specialization, and has gradually separated itself from the paint industry to form an independent industry. In 2010, China's paint production reached 9.666 million tons, and it was estimated that the amount of coating resin was about 3.4 million tons. Except for part of the coating company's resin production for its own use, in 2010 the market circulation coating resin production exceeded 1 million tons. However, at present, the production of resin for environmentally friendly coatings in China accounts for only about 15% of the total coating resin production.
