Taiwan’s ITRI and Komori Corporation jointly developed a roll-to-roll super-fine line printing technology

In a significant technological collaboration, the Taiwan Institute of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Japan-based Komori Corporation have jointly developed a volume-to-roll gravure offset printing technology aimed at replacing certain stages in the mass production of touch panels. According to ITRI, "we've already observed that some manufacturing processes are being replaced by this new method," with plans to enable local manufacturers to adopt the technology for large-scale production as early as 2014. The key application of this technology involves the lead process located on the edges of touch panels. While the line width and pitch in this area—20 μm/20 μm—are not extremely small, they are typically handled using photolithography. By switching to gravure offset printing, companies can avoid applying and removing photoresist, thus reducing both equipment costs and production time. To test the versatility of the technology, ITRI and Komori used various substrates, including PET, glass, a PET-glass hybrid, and polyimide. According to ITRI, all materials achieved high qualification rates and excellent durability. Komori also noted that a customer had successfully used their printing presses to mass-produce parts for automotive electrical components. Currently, both companies are conducting repeated experiments to refine the use of gravure offset technology in the wiring of finger detection circuits. They are working with Ag-type materials to achieve an L/S ratio of 6μm/300μm. ITRI reports that there are no major technical obstacles, and the prospect of producing 7μm/7μm wiring on mass production lines using gravure offset presses is becoming increasingly feasible. To support the experimental phase, Komori has rented a gravure offset press to ITRI and sent its technicians to assist. The intellectual property generated from this joint effort will be shared between the two organizations. Furthermore, Komori plans to collaborate with ITRI to sell the printing presses to leading touch panel manufacturers and flexible substrate producers in Taiwan, many of whom have established global presence.
