In the rainy season, abundant rainfall helps fertilizers work more effectively, which can lead to excessive or overly vigorous cotton plant growth. To prevent cotton from growing out of control, here are some effective measures:
1. Remove axillary buds and perform topping at the right time. This helps to break the apical dominance and inhibit excessive upward growth. It also reduces nutrient consumption by non-productive branches, allowing the plant to focus on developing bolls. Topping is usually done in mid to late July.
2. Control fertilizer and water application. For fields that already have sufficient base fertilizer and have received a lot of seedling fertilizer, it's advisable to apply less or no additional fertilizer. At the same time, ensure proper drainage by clearing ditches to prevent waterlogging, which can harm the plants.
3. Use chemical control methods such as applying a growth regulator like acetaminophen or auxin. This helps improve the plant structure and encourages more bud formation. During the early flowering stage, mix 6–8 ml of a supplement or 1.5–2 g of ketamine with 25–28 kg of water and spray it. In the flowering period (late July to early August), use 3 grams of ketamine per acre mixed with 30–40 kg of water for spraying. It's best to spray in the late afternoon or early morning to avoid evaporation due to high temperatures. If heavy rain occurs after spraying, reapply but reduce the dosage by half.
By following these steps, farmers can maintain healthy and productive cotton crops even during periods of heavy rainfall. Proper management not only prevents overgrowth but also enhances yield and quality. It's important to monitor the crop regularly and adjust practices based on weather conditions and plant development. With careful attention, cotton plants can be kept under control, ensuring better results throughout the growing season.
