Turkey announces oil and gas exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on the 19th that Turkey will begin exploration of oil and gas resources on the seabed in the Eastern Mediterranean this week.

Erdogan stated that the Turkish government is advancing this matter with the Turkish Cypriots and that related exploration work will begin this week.

Earlier, the Cypriot Ministry of Commerce officials confirmed that Nobel Energy of the United States began the exploration of natural gas resources in the twelfth section of the Cyprus exclusive economic zone on the night of the 18th.

Erdogan said that despite Turkey’s opposition, Cyprus, Israel and Greece still took action in this area.

Cyprus has signed agreements with Egypt and Israel for the delimitation of an exclusive economic zone to explore natural gas and petroleum resources within the exclusive economic zone. The Cypriot government has also signed a similar agreement with the Lebanese government, but it has yet to be approved by the Lebanese parliament. The Turkish government strongly opposed the Greek-controlled Cyprus government’s exploration and exploitation of seabed oil and gas resources, saying that it would trample on the rights of the Turkish Cypriots.

In July 1974, Greek military officers of the Cyprus National Guard mobilized military forces in an attempt to advance the Syrian merger movement. Turkey intervened in order to protect the local Turkish residents and controlled the territory of the northern part of the country and occupied about 37% of the island’s territory. . In 1983, the Turk announced the establishment of the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" in the northern part of the island, but it was only recognized by one Turkish state.
