HC Plastics News: Sustainable technology expert Anellotech focuses on producing cost-competitive renewable chemicals. For a long time, the company has been developing an efficient, environmentally friendly thermal catalytic process that converts non-food biomass into aromatic compounds, including benzene, toluene and xylene.
Anellotech says 100% bio-based PET bottles are coming soon
Benzene, toluene and xylene are important industrial aromatic chemicals: benzene is the intermediary for the production of chemicals; toluene is the solvent; and para-xylene is part of the manufacture of PET.
The company has developed a process called Bio-TCat. The process successfully converts non-food biofuels into mixed aromatics in the TCat-8 development and test facility.
Currently, the company has sent its first BTX products to its joint development partners IFPEN and Axens for the production of bio-p-xylene. These materials will be used to make renewable PET resins. Renewable PET resins will be used in the manufacture and testing of prototype bottles.
David Sudolsky, president and CEO of Anellotech, said that the evaluation of the pilot plant's products downstream for evaluation is another important milestone. He said that the company will continue to cooperate with partner and consumer beverage company Suntory to commercialize this technology. At present, Suntory's Suntory brand water bottles use 30% of plant raw materials and will work with Anellotech to promote the development of 100% bio-based PET bottles as part of their commitment to sustainable business activities. The alliance began in 2012 and Suntory has provided more than $30 million in funding.
