Airbus A320 uses composite materials as the main structure

HC Plastics News: On August 15, the first Airbus A320 aircraft produced at the Airbus US manufacturing plant made its first flight.

The main structure of the A320 is a composite structure made of aramid fiber (AFRP), glass fiber (GFRP) and carbon fiber (CFRP) reinforced polymer. The A320 is the first subsonic aircraft to incorporate the main structure of composite materials.

On August 15, the first Airbus A320 aircraft produced at the Airbus US manufacturing facility made its first flight. The flight lasted approximately four hours, during which time the system, engine and structural performance were tested.

The Airbus US manufacturing facility can produce three models of the A320 series: A319, A320 and A321. So far, 36 aircraft that have been in operation since 2015 are the A321, making this month's flight another milestone for US production sites.

The A320 Series receives FRP composites from a wide range of suppliers. Cotesa provides composite materials for the rudder fairing and outer ribs of the aircraft. Eire Composites supplies carbon fiber reinforced plastic for the aircraft's V2500 hood. Hexcel's HexTowIM7 carbon fiber is used in aircraft LEAP-1A engine fan blades and containment boxes, and its HexPly carbon fiber prepreg is used in the engine room. Tenkat provides carbon fiber prepregs for the tower cover of the aircraft.

The A320 began its aviation service in April 1988. Airbus said the A320 series is the world's best-selling single-channel product line with 13,241 orders and delivered 7,966 aircraft to 297 customers worldwide (as of July 31, 2017).
