2011: How the synthetic rubber industry spans from quantity to quality

Viewpoint of the industry: Prevent overcapacity and improve product quality In the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan", Sinochem's new network technology has achieved industrialized production of all seven types of synthetic rubbers in China. People in the industry believe that during the “12th Five-Year Plan” period, the synthetic rubber industry must speed up the pace of development from quantity to quality. In 2011, the main “work” for China's synthetic rubber industry was to prevent overcapacity and improve product quality.

According to Qi Runtong, secretary general of the China Synthetic Rubber Industry Association, during the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, China’s synthetic rubber industry has developed rapidly and its production capacity has increased rapidly. The rapid growth of the scale of synthetic rubber production capacity stems from the emergence of competition among various ownership enterprises.

Previously, China's synthetic rubber production and sales are mainly concentrated in Sinopec and PetroChina. In recent years, with the rapid advancement and development of foreign tire companies in China, the demand for synthetic rubber in the domestic market has increased, which has attracted a group of international synthetic rubber manufacturers to invest and set up factories in China. At present, the annual production capacity of foreign rubber or foreign-controlled synthetic rubber equipment is as high as 600,000 tons, accounting for more than 20% of the total amount of synthetic rubber in the country.

In addition, local and private enterprises have also been involved in the synthetic rubber industry. They have started or implemented projects involving styrene-butadiene rubber, butadiene rubber, nitrile rubber, butyl rubber, and isoprene rubber. According to incomplete statistics, the total capacity of synthetic rubber that has been constructed and planned by private enterprises and local enterprises nationwide is nearly one million tons, of which the existing plant has an annual production capacity of 360,000 tons.

Qi Runtong said that synthetic rubber is a capital-intensive and technology-intensive industry, once the project is launched, it will not be easily suspended, so the growth of production capacity is very fast. At present, there are already excess production capacity in some varieties of synthetic rubber in China, and this situation will be exacerbated during the 12th Five-Year Plan period. Therefore, suppressing excess production capacity is the top priority for the synthetic rubber industry at present and in the future.

The investment boom in the synthetic rubber industry is also due to the boom in the automotive market in recent years. In 2010, China's auto production and sales both exceeded 18 million, reaching 18,264,700 and 18,016,900 respectively, an increase of 32.44% and 32.37% respectively year-on-year. The increase in automobile production and sales has driven the demand for tires and synthetic rubber, because more than 60% of synthetic rubber is used in tire production.

Therefore, some experts remind enterprises that they should not only care about “carrying a cart”, but also learn to “look up at the road”. Chang Yingzhi, a research fellow in the chemical industry at China Investment Advisors Industrial Research Center, pointed out that although the production and sales volume of China's autos has increased year-on-year in 2010, the growth rate has slowed down in terms of monthly sales. It is expected that the production and sales of automobiles in 2011 will not have a hot market in 2010. In recent years, the rapid expansion of production capacity of automakers will result in overcapacity in the auto industry, which will affect the consumption of tires and even synthetic rubber.

Gong Guangbi, deputy director of the Lanzhou Chemical Research Center of China National Petroleum Corporation, also reminded companies to pay attention to the issue of excess capacity. He said that at present, China’s neighboring countries have excess capacity of synthetic rubber, with more than one million tons of imported products occupying the domestic market, and will continue to occupy the domestic market. The market share left behind by domestic installation projects will decrease, and the domestic overcapacity situation will gradually fade. . With the completion of a new batch of synthetic rubber equipment, some synthetic rubber products are changing from supply shortages to the basic balance between supply and demand, and then oversupply. At the same time, in the future, the environmental protection and energy-saving requirements for synthetic rubber products will be more stringent. For example, styrene-butadiene rubber cannot contain yttrium salt; the European Union's REACH regulation further imposes more stringent restrictions on the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc. The overall development of the synthetic rubber industry is more severe.

Another important task for the synthetic rubber industry this year is to improve product quality. "In the past, there was not enough capacity. This contradiction is not very prominent. With the continuous increase in production capacity, improving product quality is on the agenda." Qi Runtong told reporters that China is currently only a large synthetic rubber country, is not yet a synthetic rubber powerhouse, although "10 During the "15th Five-year Plan" period, China has become the world's largest producer of synthetic rubber, but its product quality and variety brands cannot fully surpass the United States. Therefore, adjusting the product structure, improving product quality, and fostering international brand names are major issues facing China's synthetic rubber industry.

Gong Guangbi pointed out that although China's synthetic rubber industry attaches great importance to the development of new products, the mechanism for the introduction of new products to the market needs further improvement. Gong Guangbi said that at present, China's technological development of rare earth butadiene rubber, energy-efficient styrene-butadiene rubber, and integrated rubber (SIBR) products has reached a certain level of technology, but to form a large-scale market products, it is necessary to carry out a series of supporting Development also requires more downstream user technology departments to participate. Synthetic rubber producers need to establish closer strategic cooperation with the downstream industries in order to bring new and desirable materials to market as soon as possible.
