DSM Introduces Latest Wind Blade High Performance Resin

DSM, the global leader in the composite resin industry, has officially released its latest research results: a high-performance resin specifically designed for wind turbine blades, the SynoliteTM 1790-G-3. The resin was jointly developed by DSM and several wind energy industry partners and was launched at the China Wind Energy Conference in Beijing on October 13-15.

In order to maximize the efficiency of wind power harvesting, the size of wind turbine blades is now growing and the length is more than 50 meters. The blades need to be more environmentally friendly, sturdy, and durable. This accordingly promotes the continuous innovation of materials to meet the strength requirements. Based on the characteristics of light weight.

SynoliteTM 1790-G-3 has low viscosity and is especially suitable for vacuum introduction process. Compared with other traditional unsaturated polyester resins and epoxy resins, it is more competitive in a range of properties. SynoliteTM 1790-G-3 is more invasive and faster to bind to reinforced glass fibers. This allows it to be more efficiently shaped into composites with a variety of glass fiber reinforcements, including those commonly used in the Chinese market.

Compared to epoxy resins and other unsaturated polyester resins, the entire curing process using the SynoliteTM 1790-G-3 can be performed at room temperature without the need for post-curing, helping manufacturers to shorten production cycles. Using SynoliteTM 1790-G-3 can save nearly 40% overall system cost compared to epoxy systems.

Simultaneously, SynoliteTM 1790-G-3 has a very low curing exotherm during the production of thicker GRP parts, which can greatly reduce the internal stress and prolong the service life of the mold - this is also the long production time of the gel and the curing process. A key element of a complex large-scale blade. SynoliteTM 1790-G-3 can be quickly and completely cured in the production of thin-layer parts, and the batch production performance is continuous and reliable.

SynoliteTM 1790-G-3 can be used to produce wind turbine blades from 500 kW up to 5, 6 MW and over 60 meters in length. It maintains excellent hardness and weatherability throughout the entire life cycle of the product, ensuring that the wind turbine generates electricity efficiently and reliably. . SynoliteTM 1790-G-3 can make the whole blade production process at room temperature, has superior secondary adhesive properties, and has a short production cycle.

“For the ever-increasing material requirements of wind turbine blade manufacturers in China and worldwide, we have developed SynoliteTM 1790-G-3, which is a very special product,” said Achim Johannes, DSM's advanced composites business manager. The blade production allows for a wider range of temperature adaptations. The blades made with SynoliteTM 1790-G-3 are very robust and durable, and because of the easier curing process, they also save energy.”

At present, this new resin has been commercialized and will be put into production in China and Europe.
